From its foundation in 1826 in the UK, Pilkington was responsible for many innovations. None was more important to the modern glass industry, however, than the invention of the float glass process. In 1952 Alastair Pilkington conceived the idea of forming a ribbon of glass by floating the melted raw materials at high temperature over a bath of molten tin. It took seven years and a great deal of investment to develop the process. Pilkington set out to replace the twin grinding and polishing process for making plate glass. The float glass process superseded not only that process, but also the sheet glass process for making ordinary windows. It was to become the universal process for the manufacture of high quality flat glass.

In addition to its leadership in making float glass, Pilkington also manufactures a wide range of pattern glass products which we are pleased to carry in stock. Please browse the applicaton photos to give examples of how these beautiful patterns can be used. Note that Pilkington patterns are available in 4mm thickness; a select few are also available in 6mm thickness. Please inquire.
